Your guide to becoming a donor and finding support in the United Kingdom
🏥 UK Bone Marrow Registry Organisations
The following organisations maintain bone marrow and blood stem cell donor registries that connect potential donors with patients in need of life-saving transplants across the UK.
Important: You only need to join one UK registry as they all share matching information anonymously. All registries work together through NHS Blood and Transplant to serve UK transplant centres.
NHS Stem Cell Donor Registry
Managed by NHS Blood and Transplant, previously known as the British Bone Marrow Registry (BBMR). The largest registry serving UK transplant centres.
Leading charity dedicated to increasing the number and diversity of people who register as blood stem cell donors. Works closely with NHS transplant centres.
Serves Wales with specific age flexibility for diverse ethnic backgrounds to improve matching outcomes for all patients.

📝 How to Get on the Registry
Becoming a donor is straightforward. There are multiple ways to register depending on which organisation you choose.
NHS Stem Cell Donor Registry Route
Be a Blood Donor
You must already be registered as a blood donor with NHS Blood Donation.
During Your Next Appointment
Ask a staff member at your next blood, plasma or platelet donation session for a leaflet about joining the stem cell registry.
Extra Blood Sample
An additional small blood sample will be taken for tissue typing (HLA typing).
Provide Consent
Your consent is recorded and your details are added to the register.
Remain on File
Your details are kept until age 61 unless you choose to opt out.
Anthony Nolan / DKMS Route (Online Registration)
Check Eligibility Online
Complete a short health questionnaire on the organisation's website.
Request Free Swab Kit
The kit arrives by post (typically within 3-7 days).
Swab Your Cheeks
Follow instructions to swab inside your mouth - similar to a large cotton bud. Does not hurt.
Return by Post
Send the swabs back in the prepaid envelope provided.
HLA Type Added
Your tissue type is processed and added to the register until age 61.
Voluntary Commitment: Joining the registry is voluntary. You maintain the right to withdraw at any point. However, if you've changed your mind after being contacted as a match, please notify the registry immediately - delays can be dangerous or life-threatening to the waiting patient. Keep your contact details updated and respond quickly if contacted.

Aged 16 to 46 for Black, Asian, mixed heritage or minority ethnic background
General Health Requirements
Donors must be in excellent overall health. Each registry maintains specific medical condition databases to check eligibility. Common exclusions include:
Uncontrolled heart disease
Autoimmune disorders
HIV/AIDS
Active or history of cancer (exceptions may apply)
Severe anaemia
Certain chronic illnesses
Recent major surgery or procedures
Some medications (chemotherapy, immunosuppressants)
Weight outside approved ranges
Tattoos & Piercings: Having tattoos does NOT automatically disqualify you. Standard infection control precautions must have been followed. Some collection centres may ask about the timing of recent tattoos or piercings for safety screening purposes.
If you're uncertain about your eligibility, you can begin the registration process and the health questionnaire will determine your suitability. Anthony Nolan and DKMS offer searchable condition databases. Email register.support@anthonynolan.org to check if you're already registered.
💉 How Donation Works
Once matched with a patient, there are two donation methods. The patient's consultant determines which is best for their treatment and your health.
Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) - ~90% of Donations
You receive growth factor injections for several days to increase stem cells in your bloodstream. Then an apheresis procedure collects stem cells from circulating blood - similar to donating plasma. Non-surgical, you remain awake throughout.
Bone Marrow Donation - ~10% of Donations
Marrow is collected from your hip bones while you're under general anaesthetic. It's an outpatient surgical procedure performed by specialist surgeons. Recovery typically takes a few days to weeks.
Your Commitment: When registering, you should be open to considering both donation methods. You don't have to agree to definitely donate via both methods when joining, but the options will be discussed if you become a potential match. All donation-related costs (medical, travel, accommodation) are covered by the NHS or registry organisation.
Donors are covered by insurance policies for complications directly related to donation. Your safety is the registry's top priority throughout the entire process.

Grief Doesn't Have Deadlines: The Loss Foundation and other charities emphasise that grief support is available at any stage of loss - whether you're anticipating loss, recently bereaved, or coping years later. Free support groups connect you with others who understand.
⚠️ Important Considerations
Diversity Matters: The UK registry urgently needs donors from all ethnic backgrounds. While patients from White backgrounds have better chances of finding matches, patients from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds face significantly lower match rates. Registering as a diverse donor dramatically improves outcomes for patients from all communities.
Insurance & Costs: All UK donors are covered by insurance for complications directly related to donation. The NHS and registry organisations cover all medical expenses, travel costs, and accommodation. Time off work arrangements should be discussed with your employer - statutory sick pay may apply during recovery.
Age Preferences: Younger donors generally provide healthier cells leading to better patient outcomes. This is why registries prefer younger age ranges for registration (16-41), though registered donors remain eligible until age 61.
NHS Regulation: The NHS Stem Cell Donor Registry and NHS Cord Blood Bank are regulated by the Human Tissue Authority and accredited by international bodies including JACIE, FACT Netcord, and the World Marrow Donor Association.
Already Registered? If you're unsure whether you're already on a registry, email register.support@anthonynolan.org with your name and date of birth to check.
Blood Cancer Statistics: Blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with over 41,000 people diagnosed every year. Approximately 250,000 people are living with blood cancer in the UK.
